Four: Castles
Any outing in Fingal is sure to feature a castle at some stage. Fingal is home to some of the best examples of Irish castles and big historical houses, restored and open for family enjoyment. Malahide Castle, Newbridge House and Ardgillan Castle all provide formal tours for families seeking to learn more about local history and society.
Bremore Castle and Howth castle can be explored from the exterior, while Swords castle in the centre of the county town is a great place to spend a few hours. Dating from around 1200, Swords Castle is a prime example of an episcopal house that became an administrative centre. Archaeological exploration has unearthed evidence of wine cellars, weapons and even a graveyard within the confines of the site which is open for visitors.
