The latest round of wetland development works have been completed in the Turvey Nature Park in Donabate. The works included the redirection of surface water into a new pond and wetland area, infilling of drains and the removal of 350 of flood embankment along the Ballyboughal river.

Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer with Fingal County Council said: “We are trying to restore the original hydrology of the area by infilling drains and removing flood embankments. This way the Nature Park will act as a sponge during periods of heavy rainfall and we are increasing the floodplain capacity of the Ballyboughal river and the Rogerstown estuary thereby reducing the impacts of flooding elsewhere. The new wetlands that we have created have attracted a wide range of new plants and animals and it makes the parks more attractive for visitors”.
