Key piece of strategic infrastructure opens in Dublin 15

Following extensive work that began in 2021, the Snugborough Interchange Upgrade located along one of Dublin’s busiest routes was officially opened today, marking the delivery of a multi-million euro project that will see significant transport improvements in the Dublin 15 area.

The interchange was opened by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Brian McDonagh, alongside Minister for Finance, Jack Chambers TD and Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman TD. A plaque was unveiled to mark the delivery of the key project located on the N3 dual carriageway.

Located at Junction 2 of the N3, the key strategic infrastructure project was co-funded by the National Transport Authority. It features new cycleways on the bridge above the N3 and the River Tolka, while also improving accessibility to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. To allow this scheme to come to its completion, there was careful consideration given on how best to mitigate the impact on the daily flow of traffic from the works.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Brian McDonagh said: ‘’This upgrade shows our commitment to improving active travel, accessibility and connectivity. It will help improve network congestion issues and provides significant improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in Blanchardstown and surrounding areas. The active travel network element of the project aligns with the National Transport Authority’s Greater Dublin Area Cycle Network Plan’’.

This multi-level and complex project includes a new active travel underpass network below the Snugborough Road which provides a much-improved connection between Old Corduff Road, Tolka Valley, Waterville Park and Blanchardstown Village.

Minister for Finance, Jack Chambers stated: ‘’The Snugborough Interchange Upgrade represents a much-needed improvement of the previous interchange arrangement which will be of enormous benefit to commuters, local residents, visitors to the region as well as those cycling and walking. The objectives that have been delivered by the Snugborough Interchange Upgrade include creating greater public transport and active travel connectivity across the N3 for those in the wider Blanchardstown area as well as significantly increasing junction safety. I understand this was a particularly complex project and I would like to thank road users for their patience and co-operation throughout the construction phase during which 80,000 vehicles continued to use the junction. This project is reflective of Government commitment to investment in roads infrastructure to benefit communities here in Dublin West and across our country.’’

Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman said ‘’I am delighted to see the official opening of the Snugborough Interchange, which I have no doubt will be of huge benefit to people in Dublin 15 and beyond. As a resident of Blanchardstown village, I’m already seeing those benefits in terms of reduced congestion. With new bus lanes, cycle lanes, and pedestrian crossings alongside an improved road layout, the new interchange will help everyone get around more easily. The Government has prioritised investment in transport infrastructure, and it is wonderful to see that deliver here in Dublin 15.’’

Deputy Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Ethna Felten stated ‘’This project is crucial for improving our community’s infrastructure. Alongside that, it will facilitate improved accessibility to the many businesses located in the Dublin 15 area. It also alleviates waiting times and traffic congestion at one of the most heavily used junctions in Blanchardstown.’’

As part of the improvement works, the new underpass features a mural designed by the artist James Earley. Titled “The Butterfly Effect” the impressive artwork celebrates the rich diversity of wildlife, flora and fauna around Snugborough. Using the anatomy of the orange tip butterfly as a focal point, the work encourages us to promote personal and ecological health in a mindful and active manner.
