Project Overview
The main objective of the project is to create a walking and cycling route that links Castleknock residents to local amenities such as shops, schools, sports facilities and the Royal Canal at the 12th Lock.
To improve the experience of walking and cycling in Castleknock, this route includes:
• Segregated Infrastructure: The project will include new dedicated cycle tracks and footpaths that are physically separated from motor traffic. By separating those walking and cycling from faster-moving motor traffic, we will make it safer to walk and cycle, and help more people choose active travel to get around, particularly children and older people who are more vulnerable on our roads.
• Traffic Safety: To improve the flow of people through this busy urban area, the project includes several new side road pedestrian crossings, changes to the design of bus stops on the route and tightening of junctions. These measures will combine to control motor traffic speed and prioritise people walking and wheeling.
• Roundabouts and Crossings: The route features pedestrian and cycle-friendly roundabouts and crossings. These are designed with safety and accessibility in mind, ensuring that everyone using the route will be able to navigate them smoothly.
The Auburn Avenue to 12th Lock Walking and Cycling Route will provide a well-designed and inclusive walking and cycling route that puts the safety and comfort of pedestrians and cyclists first. It will enhance the local area by making it safer for everyone and providing new opportunities for healthy, emissions-free active travel.
Regular updates will be provided on progress, upcoming works and changes to traffic management throughout the project on this website and on social media.
