Fergal McNamara, Conservation Architect, will give a talk in St. Margaret's Graveyard to discuss the care and maintenance of historic stone tombs in Fingal. The two stone Mausolea in St. Margaret's Graveyard and the enclosed tomb with decorative cast iron railings will be used as examples of how appropriate conservation techniques and materials can be used to conserve and safeguard these significant heritage structures for the future for the benefit of communities and the public.

The importance of ongoing maintenance and how the setting of these historic tombs can be protected and improved will be discussed. This is part of a wider survey of significant historic table tombs, mausoleums and tombs with enclosures in graveyards within Fingal County Council’s ownership, commissioned by Fingal’s Conservation Office.

The Fingal Historic Stone Tombs project has been funded by The Heritage Council through its Heritage Stewardship Fund.  The project’s aim is to inform the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of historic stone tombs in Fingal. Some of Fingal’s historic tombs require repair and are vulnerable to further deterioration and impacts arising from climate change such as stone decay and loss of detailing. These tombs are important features of Fingal’s historic graveyards, often located close to the centre of towns or villages, contributing greatly to their character and historic interest.

Meeting Point: Carpark of St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Margarets, Co. Dublin at 11am Saturday 19th August 2023.
