The Square, Donabate

In 1837 Donabate was described as a parish ‘containing 386 inhabitants of which 221 are in the village’. The original fabric and character of Donabate can be seen in an area of unique character between the town centre and Newbridge Demense. The Cross was once a noted spot, where the road from Swords approaches Donabate and is joined by a road from Turvey Avenue through the Square. The latter consists of houses once owned by the Cobbe estate is dominated by ‘The Cottage’ a detached five-bay two-storey house built c.1840,with projecting entrance porch. A cross is marked to the east of the Square on early maps.

Did you know….
There used to be an ash tree surrounded by a stone wall In the middle of the crossroads. Upon removal in the 1920s a skeleton or skeletons were found under the tree.
