Another successful Fingal and East Meath Pitch & Putt Championship

Another successful Fingal and East Meath Pitch & Putt Championship came to an exciting conclusion with the final so closely fought this year that the difference came down to one single stroke. A hole-in-one putt played by Declan Ryan of Ring-Commons awarded his team the victory. The Clubs who were leading the points table at the start of the night were Ring-Commons B and Laytown Pitch & Putt Club. The placings remained the same and Laytown had to console themselves with the Runners-up spot. The Mayor of Fingal Councillor Howard Mahony was in attendance to present the perpetual trophy to Oliver Healy, the Ring-Commons B Team Captain, and the prizes to his winning team.

Rain held off for the Final which took place in Ring Commons Pitch & Putt Club on Thursday the 18th of August 2022. The Championship is played over four evenings is now in its seventh year and it was lucky number seven for Ring-Commons. Ballyboughal held the trophy for the last two years but going into the final it was only two clubs that could be winners as the gap between them and other clubs was unlikely to be breached.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr Howard Mahony commented ‘Congratulations to Ring-Commons the winners of the Fingal and East Meath Pitch & Putt Championship. The competition has been a success in not just sporting terms but in providing valuable social connections which we all missed during Covid-19 restrictions.’

The Fingal & East Meath Pitch Putt Championship was established back in 2015 to promote the game of Pitch & Putt in Fingal and as part of a cross-county initiative.  “This is a great regular summer fixture for Pitch & Putt”, Caitríona Geraghty, Fingal Sports Development Officer, stated “but it is brought about by the great work and commitment of Ronnie Delaney of Ballyboughal”. The Championship was developed by Caitríona Geraghty under the expert stewardship of Ronnie Delaney of Ballyboughal Pitch & Putt Club and the founders aim was to develop an opportunity for clubs to create social connections, friendships and to promote the game.  The Competition takes place during the months of July and August and continues to increase in popularity and competitiveness as three clubs, Ballyboughal, Ringcommons and Bellewstown entered both an A & B Team this year.

The last two Finals the Ballyboughal teams were impacted in their celebration by Covid Social Distancing Restriction but this year a social function followed the Final with catering provided by the Ring-Commons Sports Centre and everyone joined in a night of song and celebration. Additional prizes have now been added to the competition including a nearest the pin on specific holes for each of the venues attended during the tournament, Ballyboughal, Bellewstown, Laytown and Ringcommons and prizes were awarded to these skilled players on the night. Mark Fay [Laytown], Jim Brannigan [Bellewstown], Dotty Guildea [Laytown] and Dom Scully [Laytown]. The tournament produced four hole in one’s, Derek Seery [Bellewstown], Dom Scully [Laytown], Bernie O’Driscoll [Ballyboughal] and Declan Ryan [Ring Commons] which will be remembered as the stroke that won the Championship.
