Community Climate Action Fingal entered a new phase this month when 25 Fingal-based community groups and organisations signed contracts to receive grant funding to a total value of €1,127,000. Over 100 Climate Action projects in community settings around Fingal will commence and include measures such as replacing windows, doors, installing Solar PV LEDs and installing insulation to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
Groups were invited to celebrate their successful applications and to meet Mayor of Fingal Cllr Brían McDonagh and Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly along with local Councillors at the signing ceremony held recently in County Hall in Swords.
This grant is Strand 1 of the Community Climate Action Programme which supports community groups, sports clubs, youth clubs and everything in-between and is funded in full by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The goal of the Climate Action Fund is to build low-carbon communities as part of the National Climate Action Plan.
Applications were approved for community projects across the five main themes of Energy, Travel, Food and Waste, Shopping and Recycling and Local Climate and Environmental Action. On the ground these projects will mean warmer and better-quality buildings with the installation of solar PV panels resulting in lower energy costs. They will also lead to increased recycling and circular economy initiatives, more native biodiversity, community garden expansions and composting, swap shops and better sustainability overall for the recipients and their communities.
Fingal County Council’s Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel and Sports department will administer the grant. The Community Climate Action Officer, Sinéad Fox commented: ‘I want to extend my congratulations to all the groups and partner-groups and I wish them the very best in the delivery of their worthwhile and ambitious climate action projects in the coming months which will reduce emissions and create more sustainable communities.’
