The programme was initially launched in Swords Castle on October 16 by Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien. Speaking at the final he said; “This is a fantastic programme which is designed to encourage children to read and gain confidence, to discuss a common book providing a shared experience of reading and to ignite a reading for life culture. “

This year the selected book was Rod Smith’s “World War 1 – When the Lights Went Out in Europe”. The schools taking part this year were:

St Colmcille’s Boys National School, Swords, St Helen’s Senior National School, Portmarnock, St Laurence’s Senior National School, Baldoyle, St Margaret’s, St Margaret’s, Mary Queen of Ireland NS, Rivermede and St Marnock’s , Burrow, Portmarnock.

After a very close “Battle” St Marnock’s NS emerged as the eventual winners.

County Librarian Betty Boardman said; “Fingal Libraries is delighted to have the support of Maura Cassidy and the DAA again this year for “The Battle of the Book. It is great programme to encourage children to read and interact.”
