The Fingal County Council Road Safety Section is delighted to partner with the Irish Centre for Cycling to provide training for safe cycling to GAA clubs in Fingal. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. David Healy launched the “Gearing Up for Training” initiative on Tuesday August 4th. with St. Finian’s GAA Club and Loreto College, Swords. The young U11, U12 and U13 players were really enthusiastic about the initiative which it is planned to roll out to clubs across the county.
The “Gearing up for Training” initiative is designed to provide professional theory and practical cycle training by the cycle right approved Irish Centre for Cycling to GAA clubs. This training will provide children with the necessary skills, road safety awareness and confidence to cycle to their clubhouse for training and home games, creating a healthier, more sustainable method of transport, while freeing up car parking spaces at the club for travelling teams on match days.
Mayor of Fingal Cllr David Healy commented: ’I was delighted to launch the cycle training based in St. Finian's GAA club and Loreto College Swords this morning. Fingal is committed to improving the roads and streets for people cycling, especially to go to local schools and sports facilities. Cycle training is an important complement to this infrastructure provision. It builds skills and confidence of people using bicycles on the roads. It is ideal to deliver this training to primary and secondary school students through their sports clubs and schools. We are lucky in Fingal to have Irish Centre for Cycling, who provided the training today, based in Malahide, offering cycle training to both adults and children."
“The Road Safety Section in Fingal County Council are delighted to launch the “Gearing up for Training” initiative for clubs in Fingal.” said Road Safety Officer Andrew Nolan. He continued “The aim of the training is to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to cycle with confidence; to encourage children and their families to cycle to training and matches using more sustainable forms of transport; and to alleviate issues with road safety, traffic congestion and parking at sportsgrounds.
With the majority of players and club members living within close proximity to their clubs, the aim of the initiative is to encourage people to choose to cycle to their home games and training sessions. It is great to have the Irish Centre for cycling based in Fingal who can deliver such training.”
It is our intention to roll this programme out to clubs across the county.
