Fingal County Council Heritage Officer, Christine Baker and Abarta Heritage are hosting a FREE Fingal Fieldnames Workshop in Carnegie Library, Swords (K67 N5H2), on Wednesday, 26th of March, at 7 pm. All are welcome to attend.
The Fingal Fieldnames project seeks to record the unique field names found in Fingal that offer insight into the history of the area. For example Broomfield is so named because plants that were used to make brushes were grown here. There is also Collier’s Acre, so called because Collier, the famous 19th-century Meath highwayman, used to go through this field on his way to Naul.
The project was first launched in 2018 and many names have been gathered since then. A new phase of the project is now underway with a free training workshop in Sword's Carnegie Library. At the workshop, you'll hear about interesting folklore connected to Fingal’s field names and of the experiences of former volunteers. We’ll also show you how to record field names in your locality and where you can find out more about the story of these names.
Fingal Fieldnames Project is an action of the Fingal Heritage Plan 2024-2030.
