Contractors Appointed for Harry Reynolds Road Pedestrian and Cycle Route To Connect Balbriggan

Fingal County Council has appointed Jons Civil Engineering as contractors for the Harry Reynolds Road Pedestrian and Cycle Route.

The Harry Reynolds Road Pedestrian and Cycle Route will provide a cycle-link between Drogheda Street and Hamilton Road in Balbriggan. The route will directly serve 3 school campuses at Ardgillan Community College, St. Molagas and Balbriggan Educate Together National School, as well as offering a safe cycling and walking route to shops, childcare facilities and community amenities including Millpond Park and Flemington Community Centre. The route will make travelling by Active Travel in Balbriggan safer and more convenient, particularly for children, older people and less experienced cyclists.

Following completion of a public procurement process Jons Civil Engineering has been appointed as contractor and will shortly begin work on construction of this key infrastructure for Balbriggan.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Howard Mahony said: ‘Providing safe spaces for people to walk and cycle in is vital to the sustainable growth of Balbriggan and this is a very positive step forward for the town as the team prepare to move to the construction phase of the project’.

Public consultation on the scheme took place and planning permission was granted in 2020. Since that time Fingal County Council has been undertaking preparation works including ground investigations, changes to the planting scheme along the planned route and detailed design work.

To improve the experience of walking and cycling in Balbriggan, this route includes:

Segregated cycle tracks and footpaths
New pedestrian crossings, Zebra crossings, raised tables and other traffic calming measures
Pedestrian and cycle-friendly roundabouts
Existing Traffic Signal Junctions upgrades along the route
Extensive tree and hedgerow planting
Safe cycling and traffic calming measures at Ardgillan Community College and Bracken Educate Together NS

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly said: ‘Active Travel is all about making it safer for everyone, regardless of age or mobility, to choose walking or cycling for their local journeys. Getting to school, the library, the local shops or community centre should be easiest on foot or on a bike. This new infrastructure will make travelling throughout Balbriggan a more pleasant experience and will be particularly important for local children who can get to school without the car, safely separated from motor traffic on what can be a very busy road.’

Oliver Dalton, National Transport Authority, said: ‘Active Travel is changing the way we move and putting in place high-quality infrastructure like this scheme at Harry Reynolds Road is a big step forward for Balbriggan. We are pleased to see Fingal County Council working to connect schools, homes and other amenities throughout the town with segregated cycle lanes. The infrastructure will serve the growing town for years to come and we look forward to seeing the construction phase get underway very soon.’

The project aligns with the "Our Balbriggan 2019-2025 Rejuvenation Plan" from Fingal County Council and supports the Council’s commitment to enhancing the local community through sustainable transportation initiatives. The project is fully funded by the National Transport Authority and will form part of the Greater Dublin Area cycle network.
