Fingal County Council has been shortlisted in the Transport category for this year’s SEAI Energy Awards. The Awards cover a broad spectrum of energy-related achievements, with a particular emphasis on the key focus areas of reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and fostering sustainable practices. With eleven categories highlighting diverse energy innovation, the awards aim to recognise those paving the way to a sustainable energy future.

Since 2018, Fingal County Council have led the way in energy efficiency and innovation, particularly in the electrification of its fleet. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, the organisation launched its first Fleet Electrification Programme, – a green initiative aimed at transitioning to a fully electric commercial fleet. This ambitious programme has seen rapid progress, with Fingal County Council now operating a fleet of 86 fully electric vehicles, including vans, tipper trucks, and utility vehicles, all of which are powered by renewable energy sources.

The fleet electrification programme has been complemented by a robust infrastructure rollout, featuring strategically located charging hubs in Balbriggan and Swords, ensuring operational efficiency and minimizing downtime. The transition to electric vehicles was carefully phased to meet operational needs, with extensive staff training provided to ensure smooth integration into everyday operations. This approach underscores Fingal County Council’s commitment to both innovation and practical implementation.

The environmental benefits of the fleet electrification programme are significant. The shift away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles has resulted in an annual reduction of 55,000 litres in diesel consumption, leading to a substantial decrease in carbon emissions. Additionally, the programme has generated considerable cost savings in fuel and maintenance.

Mary.T. Daly, Director of Services, Fingal County Council said “ We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Transport category at the SEAI Energy Awards. This recognition highlights the impactful progress we are making through our Fleet Electrification Programme, driving the transformation of our commercial vehicle fleet in alignment with national decarbonisation objectives. Our ongoing efforts to reduce emissions reflect Fingal County Councils commitment to provide a positive environmental legacy for generations to come."

The electrification of Fingal County Council’s operational fleet is closely aligned with national decarbonisation goals and demonstrates the organisation's leadership within the local authority sector.

As a finalist in the Transport category, Fingal County Council is proud to be recognised for its role in driving energy innovation and advancing sustainability.  Fingal County Council remains dedicated to leading by example in the adoption of clean energy solutions.
