Fingal Sports Office and Tyrrelstown/Mulhuddart Community Sports Hub have begun their Women in Sport Coaching Series. The first live Online Session took place on Thursday 25th of November via Zoom. The first guest in the series was Suzanne Maguire, Irish International Basketballer and Coach. Suzanne was in conversation with Cliona Foley, renowned freelance Sportswriter and Presenter of Women’s Sport podcast “Off the Bench”.

The Women in Sport Coaching Series aims to encourage women to step forward with confidence and get involved in coaching primarily or in sport in general. This was a major focus of the discussion last Thursday where we partnered the event with Dublin Sonics Basketball Club. Dublin Sonics is the successful basketball club based in Tyrrelstown, Dublin 15. The club has a new and vibrant girls’ section and is always looking for volunteers in both their girls and boy’s teams, and last week’s discussion is part of a plan to support more women to step forward and volunteer their time.

Suzanne spoke about her time at Fordham University, where she is a Hall of Famer and her current playing career with Division 1 basketball team the Liffey Celtics. She discussed her time on Irish International teams from u15 to u19 as well as the Senior Women’s International team. It was a fascinating insight into her career which also includes a distinguished coaching career, from the Academy right through to elite International level with the Irish u18 team.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr David Healy said: “There has been progress made in recent years in raising the profile of women’s sports and encouraging participation, but it is important to build on this progress. This coaching series featuring well known female sports personalities like Cliona Foley and Suzanne Maguire will be valuable in achieving this goal, particularly with the series available online which will ensure it reaches a wider audience.”

Margaret Geraghty, Director of Service, Fingal County Council said “this is a fantastic initiative to promote women in sport. There are plans to include other sports in the Coaching Series as part of our support of Irish Federation’s of Sport 20x20 Campaign, Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport initiatives and Fingal Sports Office’s goal in increasing female participation in Coaching”.
