IWD2022: A message from Chief Executive, AnnMarie Farrelly

AnnMarie Farrelly

Welcome to International Women’s Day. Every year, observing this day affords us the opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements across all walks of life - be it in their chosen careers or the work they do for their communities or families.

Over the last two years in navigating the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen first-hand the enormous contribution made by women on the front line and those who consistently put the needs of others first and ensured continuity of service across a myriad of areas including local government, business, health care, volunteering, community work and retail. Achievement comes in many guises and not all will be met with public accolades and awards which is why a day like this is so important in raising the profile and acknowledging the work of women.

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is #BreakTheBias and we are encouraged to challenge stereotypes, imagine a world where difference is celebrated and to cultivate diversity and inclusivity. From a personal perspective, I am very proud to be the first female Chief Executive of such a vibrant and diverse local authority. We are well represented by a strong female staff totaling 729 in a variety of roles across the organisation. In addition, we have 14 female councillors representing their constituents on Fingal County Council as well as promoting gender equality and encouraging and supporting women’s participation in politics both nationally and locally through their work with the Fingal County Council’s Women’s Caucus.

To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, Fingal County Council will be shining a spot light on women’s achievements through an exciting programme of events curated by the Community and Sports Office over the coming days. I am delighted to be attending ‘Shine a Light for Women’ at Millennium Park, Dublin 15 this evening where a tree planting ceremony, walk and a shine a light event will take place to highlight gender bias and safety issues for women.

I invite you to follow our @fingalcoco social media channels for updates, details on events and engaging content on International Women’s Day. Whether you will be spending the day with colleagues, friends or family, I wish you all a happy International Women’s Day 2022.
