Bathing Prior Warning Notices for all Fingal Beaches

Prior Warning Notices have been issued for all Fingal Identified Bathing Waters for 6-7 days due to heavy rain predicted and Do Not Swim Prohibition extended at Brook Beach Portrane.

Bathers are advised of the possibility of an increase in the levels of bacteria in the bathing water over the coming days due to very heavy rainfall.

Forecast heavy rain events can cause a deterioration in water quality at bathing waters and Local Authorities are required to implement HSE Bather Warnings to ensure public health safety. Met Éireann issued a yellow rainfall warning for Dublin yesterday (Thursday 3/8/23) for the period 6pm Friday 4/8/2023 to 1pm Saturday 5/8/2023.

There is potential risk of deterioration of water quality in such events and the HSE were consulted following this Alert on 3rd August, 2023 regarding the issue of prior warnings for the following beaches (without a current notice); South Strand, Skerries, Loughshinny, Rush North, Rush South, Balcarrick Beach, Donabate, Velvet Strand, Portmarnock, Burrow beach, Sutton and Claremont beach and the Non-identified bathing water at Malahide.

There is already an All Season Advisory at Front Strand beach, Balbriggan and a current Prohibition Notice at The Brook beach, Portrane. The resample taken on 2nd August, 2023 for The Brook beach, Portrane has met the standard for “poor” and following consultation with the HSE we will be extending the Prohibition Notice at the beach for 6 days.

Resamples have been arranged.

Members of the public can check for water quality at any of the monitored bathing waters in Ireland in advance by accessing the EPA website at www.beaches.ie or by checking the notice board at the entrance to each beach.
